Default can't install windows xp because can't find 1386

i'm trying to install windows xp on my desktop but it goes through the setup etc the gets to xp screen and sees it needs to find i386 file which i know is on the cd but i search for it and can't find it. i can cancel and it comes up again and cancel that but then it continues loading but everything is missing, like programs, etc. Just got gui mainly. Any way to get around this or any solutions. thanks in advance

Possibilities from my side are
1> May be there some problem with your CD ROM
2> Problem with IDE cable of CDROM

Check replacing two things above
3> Format your HDD using Windows 98bootable disk
- Make partitons using FDISK and format them
Then insert windows xp cd and try to install
