Default Computer suddennly die?

Whats goin on everyone? Well on friday i recieved a old computer from my cousin that was gunna throw it out. Its a compaq presario 5000. It says on the case for windows Me. He said that when it boots it shows a blue screen of death. Well after he dropped it off i took everthing out of the case and put it in a empty new HP case. After i installed everything and double checked,i booted it. I came to see that the boot screen was windows professional. It booted up fine and everything worked. I ran scans for virus's spyware and all that. Well it was fine over the last 2 days. Then i went down to grab a cd and i noticed the screen was black. Power save and all that is off, so i though somethings wrong. The HD activity light was steady so was the drive lights. I restarted it and the fans spin and the HD Act light stayed lit. But the hd didnt feel like it was spinning up. I tryed a diffrent power supply, changing ram.

Im not sure what to assume. Anyone have a idea.
This pc was only in my garage online and stuff but i really need to get it working.
thanks again,steve

Try another GFX or another stick of memory, and if possible, another motherboard. Look for loose items and blown capacitors too,

A bad hard drive will not keep a computer from posting

Correct. Then it'd try to boot and either just stay there and keep trying or display "Boot disk error".

i would try booting to a diagnostic utility disk to run test on the hard drive just to be sure. If hard drive activity light was constantly on, i would look in that direction. You have to remember, bad hard drives can make the system do weird things. I've come across a few in my days.

But they still wouldn't stop it from booting.....

Diagnostics can be incorrect. I've seen threads and from my personal experiences. They say it's good, but I get format errors, ect.
