video card generations help?????!!!!!!!

ok, so i have a dell desktop made in 2001 and the video card is i believe a nvidia 32.0 mb, and i want to get a 2m6 mb agp card but i dont know how to figure out video card generations and i dont want to buy something that don't work with my computer. so can someone tell me how i figure out what my video card generation is???
