Default Windows XP reboots continuously

I have tried to install ntldr and ntdetect.com into the c drive, but would not copy, I could not even run a dir from that drive it said "An error occured during directory enumeration (possibly a bad hardrive???). I then tried into a d drive, ntldr copied but ntdetect.com could not.

If a HDD has two or three drive (one of them maybe a recovery drive) how could I run windows from that drive?

This HDD does have some important files he would like saved. Is it possible with this current situation???

His laptop stats:

HP Pavilion dv6000
Windows Media Center
C drive
F drive <Windows>
D drive

Any or all informaion is very appreciatied
Thank you...

**Updated Information**
