Default new mouse

Im thinking of replacing both my mouse and keyboard and would like to go back to wired.

im looking at this mouse BUT i dont like mouse mats as i find they get in the way so i just have my mouse on the mdf (Smooth) wooden pc table.

would this mouse work okay without a mat?

and just incase that link doesnt work for some reason later the mouse is a Logitech MX518 Gaming Optical Mouse.

OR should i invest in a Laser mouse?....although they are $$$

well, I have the MX500 and it woks fine on my wooden table when I tried it (I do use a mouse pad normally). Its a little rough for my taste but as far as performance, its the same.
