First it would be good if you learn the basics BEFORE deciding what camera to get... that way you will now what the various specs mean... I would highly recommend reading Bryan Peterson's excellent book: Understanding Exposure (the updated version... there's an older one with a different cover, but the updated one is the one I've read.)

Now, about equipment... The Nikon D60 should probably be good, but you may find yourself wanting a D80... (in-body lens motor and stuff like that)... after reading that book you'll know a lot more about cameras though and you'll have a better idea of what to go for. I've heard good things about Nikon, Canon, and Sony (I personally like Nikon) and have heard some negative things about Olympus (which I never have been very impressed by.)
