Default Vista Home Basic

Hello All,
I’ve got a friend who is running Vista Home Basic. I’ve tinkered with it and seems very similar to the Ultimate version I have. Other than some visual effects and “Media Center” is there that big of difference in the software? It seems to me that the Home Basic is essentially a stripped down (no fancy visuals) version of Ultimate. Can some of you please shed some light on this for me? I appreciate it!!

I think Ultimate is the only version that has 'Dreamscene' backgrounds a few security features that ive been advised NOT to use, lol. I bought Ultimate thinking I was getting something better, but alas, its nothing fancy.

Well apart from the obvious (no Aero 3D effects, and other limited graphical enhancements), Home Basic vs Ultimate is basically the same as XP Home vs XP Pro, where XP Home doesn't have nearly as many networking options/features, such as joining a domain, and has a much smaller number of integrated applications.

Here's a rough overview... although "Ultimate Extras" is a bit vague.

Thanks for the replies. It just seems most reviews say to stay away from Vista Home Basic because it "sucks" but it didn't seem that bad to me. Oh well!

For the average user it's fine, but if you want to use your PC as a HTPC, or do more advanced tasks then you will realize how bad it's limitations are.

I guess that's why M$ advertises it for people who surf internet and check E-mails! Other than the transparent themes, it seemed identical to Ultimate visually.
