Oh yeah, don't forget to take lenses into consideration... they can get expensive, so if the most you can spend is $1000 and you want some decent glass, go get a Nikon D40 and a lens or two.
If all he wants/needs is one good lens the Nikon D80 is good as well as the new version, the D90.
