Hi,
I have been using Windows XP SP2 for a long time in C: drive.

Now i got my new Windows Vista Ultimate.
Vista installation was smooth but after installation when i reboot the system im unable to get the DUAL selection screen to select XP or VISTA.

I found that Vista has taken the C: drive and XP renamed to D: drive.
(I have selected D: drive at while installating Vista)

All the XP files are available in that D: drive now(So XP is not erased), but vista is automatically getting started.

How to get the Dual OS selection screen?
Pls help.

Vista automatically goes after the first primary on a drive. The new version will also immediately become the default OS. While booting if the XP was correctly detected look for the "previous versions of Windows" option seen on the first splash screen. That will come up briefly before Vista then loads by default.

If for some reason the timeout is too low like only a few seconds then that will pass too fast rather then the default 30 seconds. There are two ways to see the timeout set to default or simply increased as well as setting which version will be the default OS. The first is seen in the boot tab while in the msconfig utility.

The EasyBCD 1.71 is a free tool specifically useful when dual booting Vista along with XP. http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 The other tool which is called VistaBootPro is a copycat ripoff of the Neosmart development there.

Thanks pal tht was great help.
Before i used both XP and Linux.
Ubuntu has no problems with dual boot, it clearly specifies XP as other OS.
So what i am asking is is there any option in vista/XP itself to set options for dual boot.
Instead of installing another middleware.

The msconfig has been in Windows for a long time now since the 9X Fat based versions. Vista also sees the msconfig utility as well.

To see the more or less hidden from view boot screen you type msconfig at the Start>Run prompt and press the enter key to bring that up. Once you see that click on the boot tab and check the "No GUI boot" box seen there and simply restart the system when prompted as you exit.

Windows Defender may bring up an error message upon reaching the desktop afterwards where you click on the system tray icon to enabled the system configuration utility. That should see the error messages removed.
