Default dual boot ?

i dont know if this is the right place to post this question but i cannot find a more suitable forum

My sister has an older computer with only 256 mb ram that came with windows xp. I have been trying to convince her that xubuntu would be a better choice on a computer with little memory. So what I was wondering is would it be ok to dual boot xubuntu with xp so she can compare? or does it require extra ram to dual boot?

Xubuntu requires the least RAM of the Ubuntu Distro's. For 256 MB of RAM, it would seem the best choice. I would suggest trying the Live CD version for a bit and seeing if it runs to your liking.

she has seen the live cd but she cant really get a good feel for how much smoother and faster it would be because of the fact that it is running off a cd

i personally love ubuntu i use it on both of my computers but my question was regarding whether running two operating systems would require more ram than one. I think one shouldn't affect the other but i just wanted to check this with someone who knows a little bit more about dual booting.

Yes, it's ok to dual boot, and as imsati has already said xubuntu is the perfect choice as it's not a memory hog and it runs smoothly with XP.
