Angry I am looking to buy new speakers. Please help me.

The speakers I have now are Labtec Spin-60's I bought for 20 dollars from Stop and Save around 10 years ago, so I mean they are ancient relics. They don't even have a power source. Granted I have read some reviews lately and they are apparently very solid, but I can tell the difference.

So, here I am with no idea what to buy. Despite a lack of space or a suitable room, I want 5.1 speakers for the sheer novelty slash multiple uses I can get from them. My desk has room I could put them on, So it would sort of be 5 speakers in front of me. But if any of you want to tell me 2.1's are better that will be fine.

I have a number of worries. 1. Price 2. The woofer probably will be next to my tower and my UPS unit, so it cannot mess with either of those (magnetic shielding) and 3. A Wireless remote unit would be nice.

I have, of course, looked at the Logitech Z-5500's, but I am wary of the subwoofer, the price, and the power consumption (though I guess that last one is a bit silly, I do consider it.)

I am willing to admit that I will be buying a new monitor as well, so I'm assuming my old CTR will free up some load on my UPS. Any suggestions would be nice. I'm also going to make another topic for my monitor, if any of you want to help me out there as well.

And if it's not too much, a corresponding Sound Card wouldn't be a bad suggestion.

Thanks everyone!

The Z-5500's are great, but if you want to go a cheaper route, you could go with the X-530's (which I believe are like $60 on Newegg), which are really great speakers for the price.

As for a sound card, it really depends on how much you want to spend. You can get a good quality card for $30 or so, or you can always spend more.

The X-530's look very interesting, and at such a low price they're pretty hard to resist. Can I get some subwoofer advice though? I mean can I put it next to my stuff like that? Isn't it going to mess it all up? I don't have a large desk though, so if I can't put it next to my tower it's going to have to be far away, so it will probably not even make much noise.

I need lots of help with that. And I'm going to be torn between these two Logitechs. I wish some stores had them on display, they only have Bose stuff that sound so weird.

Do you think it's at all possible to get the 530 speakers with the 5500 remote? I really like the 5500 remote and seemingly easy of use, but I don't need a powerful bass and all. I don't even know where I'm going to put the subwoofer I never had one before and there's no room anywhere for it.

EDIT 2: Should I jump on this one? Is this even something I can trust?

EDIT 3: If I do buy those speakers at what seems to be a steal at 190, what soundcard should I get? What are my options? How will I know it works on my old computer? I'm buying it for my future computer, but I'd like to use them ASAP, you know?

I need major help, I don't think I've had a real sound card on a computer (not onboard) since the first Sound Blasters. Which my Uncle was big into. Those were good times...

Does anyone know a good soundcard that'll work on Linux? I want to run Ubuntu on my next computer as well as XP. I know X-Fi doesn't work - and that they're uber expensive.
