Question Can i keep my old music? i really need it

just wondering- i have an old IDE hard drive with a bunch of good music and stuff. id like to keep the music and videos. i dont need the programs i guess. so when i turn on the computer with the HD in, when i open iTunes, would the songs be there? or do i have to extract the m or whatever you call it?
thanks
