Default HELP!!!! all data gone on ps3

Well my brother called me and told me that all the stuff on the ps3 is gone! so i come home and look at it. i am in the process of taking the hard drive out and pluging it into a linux box. He said he did nothing and he turned it on and asked to plug the control in to start the setup. UNFORTUNALTY AND I AM MAD HE DID IT but he went with it and setup the three accounts!!!! so my hope of a successful full backup are slim. I dont know what format the ps3 is in but is there a way i can try to recover it. also did this happen to any one else? i really dont know what could of happened

If you can see this, you have WAY TOO much time on your hand. Or you're a mod going through my sig. But if you do, copy and past this in your sig.
