Default The Video Games Heritage List (Nominations)

Thought this might be fun to see what everyone things is worthy of going on such a list.

This is the nomination round.
Everyone is entitled to nominate 5 games they feel deserve to go on the Video Games Heritage List.
With each nomination, give a brief explanation of why you chose that title.
Be sure to include what console or system the game appeared on.
Try to keep conversation to a minimum so the thread can be for mainly just nominations

To be on a 'Heritage' list, the game must have had some sort of profound cultural or historic relevance. IE, It changed the way we play games, It defined an ere of video games, or it was a turning point for a genre, etc... Keep this in mind when choosing your titles. There is no 'wrong' answer, but more nominations are going to be given to the BIG names.

After the weekend, Ill tally up the scores and the top 15-20 (depends how many there are!) will appear on a poll to narrow down the 5 heritage games.

So my nominations are in no particular order:

1. Nintendo 64- "Goldeneye" (FPS)
Goldeneye remains one of the most fun FPS games ever made. It took a rather stale genre at the time and introduced elements that games today have copied ever since. Nintendo 64's controller gave players total control over aiming and firing in a whole new way using the joystick and has an arsenal of weapons to wreck havoc on your enemies. It also was a staple multiplayer game and one that I personally wasted hours of my life to playing at friends houses as a kid.

2.
Playstation- "Resident Evil 2" (Action)
The resident evil series gave the horror/action genre a complete makeover in a freighting way! One of the few games that actually made me physically jump while playing late at night and turning a corner to have a crawler fall on your head and start feasting. I chose the second RE because it seemed a lot better put together and thought out, not to mention the story was awesome and (from what I remember) was one of the few PS games that actually unveiled more of the plot depending which disc you played first (Claires mission=>Leons mission or Leons Mission=>Claires Mission)

3.
Playstation- "Final Fantasy VII" (RPG)
Im sure I wont be the last one to nominate this game. All that really needs to be said is that it was probably the only or among the only video games that ever brought a young nerd to tears when Aeris died at the end of disc 1. The game was freaking expansive covering 3 cds with beautiful cut scenes and incredibly deep plots. The battle system was unique to the RPG genre simply on how detailed you could customize your weapons and magic based on what you paired with.

4.
PC- "Doom" (FPS)
Ah, Doom. A FPS game that debatably was the grandfather for every awesome shooter that would come after it. Based on its insanity and pure carnage. Not to mention its one of the few games where cheat codes actually make the game 400% more fun and ensured their patterns would be forever locked in your memory (idafk, anyone?)

5.
Super NES "Mortal Combat" (fighting)
Finally after much debate, I present Mortal Combat. If only todays parents knew then what they knew now... Mortal Combat at the time was the game your mother swore she would fatality your ass if ever she caught you playing... but we all played it I chose this game because it was really the first 'Shocking' game that would set the tone for titles like GTA in the future to piss parents off and make them wonder how our generation could go so terribly astray

I tried to choose 5 deserving 'not obvious' titles for the list. Cant wait to see what everyone nominates!

I'm on my touch so my explanations wont be quite as in depth as yours but here goes...
1. Earthbound for snes - my fav game of all time, an RPG set in modern times and instead of potions you eat things like chili dogs. The whole game has a quirky feel to it and a great sense of humor

2. Day of defeat for pc - a half life mod that introduced me to clanplay online, the game had amazing gameplay as well as atmosphere

3. Ff7 for obvious reasons

4. Perfect dark for n64

5. Starcraft

1. Team Fortress 2 on PC. Great Look. Awsome Gamplay. Requires Strat.
2. Warcraft 3 on PC. Never gets boring on battle net. Was a good RTS.
3. Crysis. Good Graphics. Unbeatable physics. FTW !

1. Super Metroid - SNES

An exceptionally challenging game due to an intricant plot that was accompanied with interesting sound FX's and music. My all-time favourite game.

2. Seven Kingdoms - PC

This graphically simplistic (for todays standards) yet feature advanced game is another one of my all-time favourites, if it wasn't for the primitive Ai I'd still spend the odd hour on it. One day, probably in the distant future I will convice someone to play a network game with me and I will finally be able to be the best =). Also, I'm getting some enjoyment from the sequel, Ai has improved somewhat.

3. The Godfather - PS2

Being someone who adores the Godfather movies playing the game was just the next step. Spent a ridiculous amount of time conquering all to become the Don, but it was worth it. If only I could complete it without dying once, no easy task I assure you. The storyline was impressive and I enjoyed spending ages in creating the physical appearance and of course the clothes, I wish I could get away with wearing those suits. I really enjoyed the free roaming part of it, driving through the towns without having to endure those mind-numbing loading screens, alah Mafia (I think..over the bridges). Of course one cannot forget to mention the godfather theme, that tune is awesome.

4. Hitman - Silent Assassin - PS2

Utilising different methods to assasinate someone, while marvelling at the picturesque surroundings and being calmed somewhat by the background music, are something that VERY few games can offer. Contracts delivered as well, yet to fully play Blood Money.

I honestly can't decide between these two..sorry.

The Matrix - Path of Neo - PS2

Challenging to the very end, dare to dodge bullets ?

God Of War - PS2

Astounded by the detal in the graphics, how someone could so accurately capture what would have originated in the imagination is a feat to behold, stunning. At least 12 hours for me.. KRATOS !!, can't wait to play the sequel.

Probably missed a few of the greats, there's too many games to mention... I'd imagine Tomb Raider will get a shout from someone, can't comment myself.

1) Nintendo: Tecmo Super Bowl

It was the only NFL game at the time with the real teams, players and you could track your stats throughout the season. Although it was hella easy, the gameplay was pretty fun.

2) Nintendo 64: Goldeneye

I actually forgot about this game until I reread Ninja's post. Me and my buddies used to get drunk and play the MP for hours. Awesome game ahead of it's time.

3) Playstation: Final Fantasy 7

Like Dirty said, for obvious reasons.

4) Playstation 2: Gran Turismo 3

One of the best racing games ever.

5) Playstation 2: Final Fantasy 10

Excellent graphics and a great addition to the FF series. Can't wait for the PS3 version.

Halo(fps)
-Sure three is great but the first is the one that started it all. I could spend hour and hours playing that game. If it had never come out I would probably doing something lame right now like going outside or being with my family.

Halo3(fps)
-While halo2 takes the cake for starting the xbox multiplayer movement, the single player sucked. Halo3 has the best multiplayer and single player of all time.

Half life(fps)
-This was a game that didnt have that much of an impact on me, but it changed the way the community gamed.

Half life 2/source engine(fps)
-One of the greatest and most used engine of all time, how could you not put this on the list? (Yes, I know its actually the quake engine, shhh).

Portal/OrangeBox(fps)
-Subculture of the source engine it revolutionized the way the gamer and character on screen react with the environment. Using portals to get around instead of the usual "shoot till you drop" gametype.

Call of Duty(fps)
-This game was great when it came out, maybe not the best graphics, but the way you played was so much different using teammates and such and what not.

Crysis(fps)
-Unlike my other nominations this one is only a couple of months old, but the revolutionary graphics and physics engine is unlike any other. I would put FarCry, but that sucked .

FF8 - PS and PC: Great characters and game philosophy, contributed much to the series in terms of complexity and gameplay.

Thief 2, The Metal Age - PC: Incredibly awesome and original. Truly inspiring development. Set a high standard for stealth in gaming.

FF7 - PS: 'nuf said.

PACMAN - Atari 2600: Great AI for a simple 2D game.
