Default new hp dvd drive with nero

ok, so i go and buy a new dvd drive for my computer, so i could watch dvds on my computer:

HP dvd1040i
20x Multiformat DVD writer

well, i put it in the computer, and i downloaded the nero software that came with it:

Nero 7 Essentials

so that's cool, i can put dvds in the drive and watch them, right? NO!!!
it doesnt have any sound, it says that the multimedia i am using requires the use of dolby digital technology, and offers me a free trial....what's up with that?

you are using Nero to view the Dvd movies am i right ?
nero is so old news.....use VLC or purchase POWERDVD from Cyberlink.
you have many alternatives to dvd player other than Nero

I would use Nero for burning disks and Lightscribe is a part of that process (it allows you to create disk labels with the burner itself, though you need Lightscribe capable disks).

For playing, I agree to use VLC or PowerDVD, both are good apps.

As for the sound, do you hear sound in other programs? In Windows, when it boots? Check your sound drivers, your volume control, and you Media Player Volume.

Turns out this is a common problem. Happened to me yesterday too. Installing Nero overwrites the audio codec in WMP. (Check -open WMP>tools>options>DVD>advanced. If it shows Nero in the main tab, you've lost your audio codec for DVD playback). You just need to download a new codec to replace it. I used 'ac3 filter' from the opensource project which cured my WMP9 problem.

I used v1.09a because I knew it worked, but there are newer versions available.

it depends on the Nero installation, the type you did. some people installing it FULL which install this stupid nero dvd player (forgot the name) but if you did a custom install, untick the unnecessary such as dvd player, soundtrax etc, your settings would have remain fine
