Static electricity

I have been using an anti-static wristband while working ony my computer but i was wondering 1 thing. First im working on the rug, with my computer on a large pillow so its not touching, anyway if i short any of my components will i know it when i touch them?

i have heard it is near imposable to shock a mb bad. i have seen people try and not fry it. i could be wrong but it would have to be one huge ark.

It can be a tricky thing. If you fry something in a chip, how do you know? you cannot see it. It might just show up some day as wierd problems

You probably won't but you'll know when it your computer doesn't work correctly. You wanna shock a computer component? Run a comb through your hair (dry) 3 times and put it on the computer component. FRIED.

hum rly...... goes gets comb to try to fry a p3 b/c it does not deserve to live anymore. LOL i do have a spair mb and p3, and ram i will try to kill it

It really just depends on where it's touched and the situation. And applied to the right place, the amount of static electricity to fry any component is relatively minuscule, much less than that required to make any sort of arc at all.

Ummm... probably not the best idea. While it's good that you're wearing an antistatic wristband, which is hopefully attached to something metal and grounded, it's not good to set components on anything cloth. Carpet is bad, but a pillow wouldn't be much better as it's still prone to creating static electricity. You'd be best off working on some sort of desk or workbench on a hard floor.

And I'm sure someone is thinking that it's too much precautions. I know there are people that have probably dissembled their computer on a shag rug while wearing a fuzzy wool sweater and nothing happened, which is completely possible. I used to be a lot more careless as well, as I had never fried anything, but that changed once I fried the board on a $1200 MacBook... for no other reason than I pulled it into my lap as I was working on it and it rubbed up against my jeans.

I use one now and blew my mac after opening the case one day when i was really young and touched the memory while it was running and the computer shut off and made a weird noise.

okay stupid question but when building a pc where should the anti static wrist strap be grounded to is the computer case okay? also i am working on my computer on a hardwood floor in the kitchen actually the work is being done on the island in the middle of the kitchen which has tile on it should i or should i not wear socks or does that matter thank you.

when i used one, i tied off to the radiator.
but i think its pointless to use them now. just be careful and dont touch anything with any resistors or caps or the pcb board and your fine.

as for frying components, i fried an 8800gt

i smacked my finger with a hammer and rubbed my jeans to numb the pain. then picked up my 8800gt and i heard a crack or 2. didnt load at all so it was an rma.
