According to crucial.com website the Dell Dimension 4400 motherboard can take a maximum of 512 megabytes per slot.
The following specified memory works in your system: DDR 333 (PC 2700), 184-pin or DDR 400 (PC 3200), 184-pin I wouldn't bother buying two 512 megabyte modules of RAM. Buying one 512 megabyte module should suffice and bring your system near or at its maximum capacity since you only have two slots for random access memory.

No. Your system can hold a max of 1 GB (2 x 512 MB sticks). Standard for that system was 128MB. 768 MB or 1 GB will be fine. How much RAM do you have in there now (standard was 128 MB)? If you have the standard 128, I would get 2 512 MB sticks and ditch the 128 one. If you have 256 MB, then I'd go for 1 512 MB stick for a total of 768.

Just get what you could really afford. At least try to get a 512MB stick or RAM in there. If you can get a 2 x 512MB then go for it but if not then just add the 512MB next to what ever you have right now and then when you can get another 512MB stick in there do so.
