Default Suggestions for DSLR?

Found out today that our station wants to start taking pictures to post on the website and thus, Im going to be in charge of such a task. I currently have a Fuji S5000 (It might be the 7000 I dont freaking know) anyway, Its a decent camera but nowhere near SLR quality. I was interested in picking up a DSLR but didnt really know where to start or what I would be looking at spending. I would like to stay within the $500 range if possible. Any suggestion you have would be wonderful. Ive heard good things about Nikons, so if you know a good model or anything let me know!

I just started lookin at the XT and 10.1 mb XTI, although I sort of doubt the need for 10.1mb since I wont be blowing any images up. 8mb would be really solid.

Anyone have tips for shooting inside of a courtroom? I assume lighting will be the biggest issue since it is a very old courtroom and the lamps inside are pretty darn old too. I have so many new things to learn with this camera!

We'd need more details.
Are you allowed to use flash?
Do you only have stock equipment (kit lens)?
Do you have a budget?
Are you shooting people or just the court room? If just the court room, then a tripod/ monopod would be in your best interest.
