Default Using a 5.1 set with all the satellites in front of you?

I was reading a review of the X-230 and one person who didn't like them recommended getting a 5.1 set instead and just putting all the speakers in front of you. So I found these for not much more than the X-230:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16836121126

And I was wondering, what kind of audio effect would this have if all the satellites are on your desk in front of you? Would it still sound good? Or would it sound weird if they aren't located where they are supposed to be?

Wellk i have a set of Logitech X 540's and they are 5.1 surround and i have the speakers on my desk in front of my and my sub under my desk and it works fine.

You'll have to get a 5.1 Sound Card unless you have a motherboard which is compatible.

But the speakers sound really good!

No! Don't even dare to put a 5.1 sound system in front of you!!!

Nah just kidding (the angry mood ) But yeah, if you get a 5.1 system, theres no point if you are just gonna put it in front of you. There's a reason why they call them "Surround" trust me, find a way to put them around you and you will get awesome sound quality, especially from games!

Cool. Does it sound strange that way, or is it still normal?

If they all go in front of you, try to get them to the far left and far right instead of the rear.

X530's are amazing, I have them! I put them infront/on the side as well. The thing is logitech arnt dumb, they know not everyone in the world can put them behind you. So instead of making all 4 speakers the same level of sound, the "back" 2 are slightly quieter so you can differentiate, it has some sort of holophonics to it.

EDIT: Bad pic, but this is how I have mine set up, works great.

Im not usually that messy I swear!

Well it kind of defeats the purpose of the 5.1 speakers. Also, it might get a bit annoying if you play games, especially those with really nice sounds, like BF2.

I'd get 5.1 if I had somewhere to put the rears but I don't. My keyboard (music) is beside me and my bed is to the other side. They do have 5.1 surround headphones. I haven't heard them though.
