Default Entire folder deleted...except not really

I am a video editor and I have a seagate 300gb external hard drive. I was editing in adobe after effects cs3 and I imported a short clip to do a few things to before I edited it in premiere. Once i finished with this clip i continued to open up the import window to import another clip. The entire folder was empty. i explored the drive manually and it was still empty. The file which i was editing in after effects still functioned and all of the files in recent documents under the start menu still functioned. Where have these files gone and how do i retrieve them? This is a case of "time is money" so a prompt response would be helpful,
thanks,
Andrew

do you know how to show the hidden files????

if not:
1. - in Windows Explorer go to tools > folder options > view > hidden files and folders > show hidden files / folders.
