help on saving my data

i have a 300 gig sata, and 300 gig usb. i went to reinstal on my sata... deleted the partition on the usb, but did not format it....
i got partition magic, my question is... if i click "create new partition" will it overwrite my old data? i have pictures and music that i really would like to save

no one got any ideas?
i paid money for partition magic, some people say its crap.. is there another program i should look into? maybe a free download, or a text file that will tell me how to do everything in dos?
