Unhappy laptop not playing DVD sound

Well - I've been working in IT for around 3 years now and this is one of the most difficult ones I have ever come across...

I have an Acer Aspire 1640 ( my brothers). MP3's, Microsoft Sounds, sound files etc work within all applications. There is one minor problem - any software application (Nero and Windows Media Player) that I use to play DVD's doesn't play sound from the DVD's.

I have installed a codec on the laptop and this still doesn't work. The DVD movie itself will actually play, but the sound does not produce itself - dead set silence. All drivers are on the PC and there aren't any missing drivers. I had another IT guy have a play around with it and he couldn't fix it either.

I am thinking that it could be the CODEC is dodgeeedddy dodge dodge dodgy! I downloaded the following CODEC:

Any suggestions people ? Aside from telling me Aspire's are s**t and I should throw it out...?
