Default question about optical audio

okay so on my asus p5k-e my optical drive audio connect is totaly blocked by my huge ass videocard.. so i cant plugg it in and i dont have a soudn card rite now, what excatly happens if i dunt plug in that red/black/white cable ot my dvd burners?

i have the same cable, nothing will happen, atleast i dont think so. my cable either plugs into my soundcard, or my mobo, either one. i chose to plug into mobo, because i didnt notice any significane with it being plugged into my soundcard
