So I just built my first computer over the weekend and have yet to do much with it. I went into the ASUS BIOS to update it and what not and saw that the CPU was running pretty hot. So I put in some Arctic Silver 5 instead of whatever is on the stock heatsink to begin with. It's still running 45-50 just idle in the BIOS. Should I probably invest in a new heatsink?? Or wait til I install XP...

First of all even with a stock hsf it still takes a few days for the compound applied to start the bonding process and temps will be warm until the heat conduction starts to take place. The first night or day is where you run the system for only about 4 hrs. to see things warm up and then off the system goes like overnight.
Once the thermal paste(if not over applied?) starts to bond in a few days the temps will start to come down. Another common misconception is the cpu cooler used while a case lacks good air flow. Once you seeing better cooling inside especially with the board the cpu temps will suddenly be lower. You can have a Zalman 9700 cooler on like the one here used on a 6000+ X2 and still see high cpu temps if the case lacks any front fan or even vents front or side. On old case used here on a previous build is a classic example of seeing temps drop fast! That only saw two 80mm case fans rear and top with no vents at all let alone a front fan. The cpu then when upgrading the board, cpu, and memory was seeing 46C for the cpu and 48C for the board! Once moved into a new case with a 140mm front intake and 120 rear fan the board alone dropped to 31C with the cpu down to 33C for the ide temps.

Keep a close eye on them in the meantime. If you start seeing over 50C don't play games simply shut it down since the max temps are lower now then seen on the older Socket types like A(462), 754s, P4s, etc..

isnt it true, a newer processer can be damaged if without a heatsink in 10 seconds flat?

EDIT: ^ i think that's only in case of a CPU with bare die, most cpus come with those whatever ya call them metal things attached to them, so as to protect them from instantly frying out in flames before your eyes...but turning those thing on w/o a heatsink is a no-no all the same.

When first appying any thermal paste or compound you only run the system for about 3-4hrs. to heat the paste up and shut down for several. Even while newer boards come with an overheat protection circuit to prevent a disaster you first want to make sure that things are done right to begin with. Otherwise... ?

I turned it on this morning and was seeing idles of 38-40 on CoreTemp. What should I be taking readings from??? Coretemp or BIOS, b/c the BIOS was saying 45-48 when I turned it on. Also I use the Antec 900 case in an open area on my desk so the case is having no ventilation problems I would assume. I'll turn it on again once I get home from work and see where I'm at.
I also read that the 6400+ goes to max temp of 55-63. If I'm full loading with Orthos should it be OK to be within that range?? |

I usually take all three temps with PC Wizard into consideration along with a look in the bios at times. The 45-48C when first turning the system can't be right since it wouldn't be on long enough to heat up like that even with a stock hsf except for the breakin time still needed for the Artic Silver 5 added to the stock thermal pad.
After a few days the 38-40C being seen will probably see down to 30C. The 6000+ being the next lower model here saw 23C on the third day for an idle temp. For the 9700 on top I am presently seeing 27C for a processor temp and 29C on both cores while the board is at 32C. Once I reboot into Vista since I'm in XP presently working on something I can give the quick look in the hardware monitor while not expecting to much of a difference. The max on this one is about 60-65C while you never want to get that high if the board doesn't shut itself off first.
