Default freeware Remote Desktop alternative

Anyone know of a trustworthy remote desktop type of an application that is also freeware or open source?

I want to connect to my mother's computer so I can maintain and troubleshoot it for her from my own computer.

I have Windows XP Home edition, and I understand that I can't do remote desktop unless I have the Pro edition. I know I could use Remote Assistance (which I've been doing for the last week now), but I have to wait until she's home and have her give me permission.

I just want to be able to connect to her computer at anytime, but for free

TeamViewer is good and FREE app. You install it on your computer and then put the standalone version on a flash drive. Then whenever you're on a different computer, just start up the standalone version and POOF! You have access to your computer.
