Default trouble getting decent internet over wifi in different room

hi guys, this is my first post here.

my setup:-

aol 2 meg broadband,
dlink router dsl-2640b
desktop pc linked by ethernet
acer aspire 1642zwlmi linked by wifi

when i use my laptop in the same room as the routr i get perfect intrnet connection at full speed. when i go out of the room the signal strength drops dramatically and becomes very slow or doesnt work at all.

as the internet is only 2 meg/s shouldnt it still work at full speed at low signal as the transmission speed is always above the internet speed.

another thing to mention is that windows says there is full signal before i connect, but once i do it drops.

can any one help

What channel is your wireless on?

also are there a lot of neighbors near you with wireless too? IE in windows do you see a lot of wireless connections

If you can see this, you have WAY TOO much time on your hand. Or you're a mod going through my sig. But if you do, copy and past this in your sig.

Good Point...

Try a different channel and make sure there is security on the channel

theres 4-5 in my street, laptop doesnt always pick them up though, ive been using network stumbler to check the channel and changed it but doesnt make any difference, i think theres something wrong with the router.

im currently 3-4 m away and im getting 36mbps wifi on g with v.good signal, sometimes changing to 48mbps with good signal. when im in uni i can get full speed and everything works so i know its not the laptop

my router is 54mbps. it always drops though. currently at 18mbps in rom under router.

ive just bought a pcmcia wifi adapter and its still bad. according to the software ive got

noise: -81
signal strength: -64
link quality: 69%

looking at other posts, the noise is too high. could this be due to pipes and power cables etc, as im in an old house, so they would be more likely to interfere
