All around big problem

I sure hope someone can help me fix this problem. Recently my computer has been acting up. I was using mozilla firefox and it would just randomly shut down, so i tried to download some anti virus programs and it just made it worse. I downloaded antivir and reset the computer, when it went to reboot i could not get windows to open up for more than 2 min before it would reboot again. So i reinstalled windows, and voila the same problem, except now i have IE and it shuts itself down. Last night i tried to format my harddrive and it kept telling me the volume was inuse. So i tried to boot from cdrom and format that was but it told me no that windows had some setup files that could not be erased. So now i have to copys of windows on my harddrive. I sure hope someone knows what to do because i have exhausted my brain. Thanks

For one before assuming any virus or software problem unexpected system shutdowns are usually hardware not software related like something overheating or a failing power supply if no board faults are being realized. How old is the system? delayed boot ups and sudden restarts can also be bios related or simply seeing a weak battery on the board itself.

the computer is older, mother board has a cartrige processer if that tells you anything. It was running just fine, now i cant do anything. Its either booting me out of my browser or the whole system keeps randomly rebooting. Is there any thing i can do to figure out whats going on?

Same problem a few months ago. Turned out to be the ram no longer being able to function in dual channel. However, your computer might be too old to use dual channel. Is that correct?

i would need you to explain more. I know more than the average joe about computers but duel channel is something new to me. I know that i have 4 slots for ram on my mother board. Does that help?

To quickly explain, dual channel is two sticks of ram both installed into corresponding color coded slots on the mobo. Dual channel allows the ram to work together netting better performance. If you have only one stick, then this is obviously null. The way I fixed mine was to take one of the sticks out of the corresponding color slot and switch it to another.

Dual channel is two separate memory channels. An older Slot 1 type cou if AMD sounds like what you have there with the heat sink being on the side rather then being seen mounted on the top. A board that old wouldn't see any dual channel mode since that started with the Socket A model boards.

my mobo has 4 slots for ram sticks. I had 3 installed they read, 128mb 16x64 pc100. I took one of them out and everything seems to be running great right now. I still get a error message after rebooting that says explorer has encountered an error. I just push dont send and go on my way.

Most likely a hardware issue and most of the time it is a ram issue with older pc's like yours,

No surprise seeing a bad piece of memory or just about anything else on an old system. Generally the advice would be to run memtest for several hours on each simm to stress test each one individually. It's not always a memory problem but often bios related as another thing to consider.
