just wondering if there will be much of a difference in boot up speed between the 2 drives---
smasung 16mb cache 160gig s-ata 7200rpm (current h/drive) maxtor 32mb cache 500gig s-ata 7200rpm (upgrade h/drive) also i have another 2 gig of corsair xms2 ram if i replace the current drive with the 500gig and put another 2gig ram inside do you guys think there will be an increase in boot up time or any kind of performance gained...... i have spent alot of money on this dam thing now, all i have after these 2 upgrades is a graphics card then im done ![]()

Probably a little bit, the 500GB drive will be a bit faster because it is bigger. The performance increase from the increased cache is pretty much nil though.

do you think that the bigger the drive the faster it would read?
does the cache just add performance to "saving files to disk?"

No, the only time a larger hard drive would be faster if all other factors are the same, is if the smaller hard drive is running low on disk space, and doesn't have enough free space for a large enough page file or enough free space to move files around.

Also, drives dont arbitrarily move files around to make space for a new file. If there's not a large open space they just stick parts where ever they find free space. That's why fragmentation occurs. That said, that samsung might still be faster than a larger maxtor (I didn't really look at the drives before). You'd have to check benchmarks to know for sure.
