thanks for the replies everyone. Very helpful. It's hard sometimes to get a good idea of the so called "best bang for your buck" from a search engine because everyone is so subjective about which parts are the best. But pretty much everyone's replies have been more helpful than the weeks of searching I have done on google and ebay.

I bought my complete computer for $658 shipped from newegg (see my sig for specs). That is a 8800GT, 3.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo, P35 mobo, 2GB of DDR2 1066 RAM, PS, DVD-RW, HD, Case, etc.
I'd build my own before I bought that one. You are going to have to spend another $150+ on a new video card if you want to play any serious games. Try and talk him down, $500 would not be too bad, $450 would be better.
