Default Computer Problem

Humm...I got a new computer about a month and a half ago, and its been running perfectly fine, But then last week there was a Blackout while I was getting ready to turn it off, and now whenever I start it about a min after, it freezes up.I was going to try and do a Clean install of Windows XP, but when I started it, it freezes a minute into it, like it normally does. Any ideas on what I could do or what the problem could be?

Basic Info

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz 4M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX All Solid Capacitor Intel Motherboard

160GB HDD
2GB of Ram
8400GS Graphics Card.

I wouldn't be surprised if you're losing the 12V, or getting significant variance out of tolerance and the HDD shuts down. Once that happens, your computer will lock up.

Yea since it happed right when it was powering on it could have messed with the P/S. Try unplugging the P/S, flip the switch off on the back and push the power button on the case a few times. Then plug it back up turn the switch back on and see what happens.

I didn't say while I was turning it on. I said when i was about to turn it off, witch was right before I was going to hit the shutdown button in windows.

and it was on a surge protector, not sure if that still works or not, its pretty old.
Could this be happening from the CPU getting to hot at all?

open up the case. right when you turn it on, maybe 30 seconds later, put a finger on the heatsink to see if its hot, if you say ouch, thats not a good sign.

Thermal paste doesn't go bad overnight, this is a power problem. You said that the surge protector is old, maybe that is your problem, you probably fried the psu, or another component.

It seems kinda far fetched that a power outtage would fry something, wouldn't it? I could be wrong though, cuz thats happend to me and I'm still using my computer. and it happend alot at one point too. Maybe it was a one in a million shot?

Try just plugging it into the regular wall socket, or a different surge protector, or a power bar... might just be your surge protector is buggered.
