HL2 based games crash

The computer I am using is in my sig below. I am using windows XP Pro SP2. I have the latest ATI driver 8.471.0.0 and I Have DX 9.0c.

In the past playing HL2 was fine. Now when a play any HL2:source game (HL2, CS:S, source forts) it will crash during the game playing. THere is no apparent point in any of the games where it crashes, it just does. The crash goes like this: Every thing stops moving, sounds Loops over and over, screen goes balck and audio is still looping. Finaly no audio and wierd pixels on screen. here are some pictures of what the crash looks like. http://www.flickr.com/photos/2391581...7604266327128/

the wierd part is that the ubuntu logo shows up on screen. I do have ubuntu installed on a sepperate partion.

Orginaly I had HL2 installed on a FAT32 partion and was having the same problem. I moved around partition sizes and installed HL2 onto my NTFS C drive. I kept getting the same error so i did defrag within safe mode

I highly doubt this is a video card problem. I can play UrbanTerror 4.1 in Ubuntu fine and I have run the video stress test in counter strike several times no prob. I ran 3DMark06 with no errors.

I am using the 5 CD box set of HL2, CS:S HL2: DM. I guess the CD's could be bad.

Is there a way to fix this problem with out having to buy new CD/DVD?

I Filmed HL2 starting up. you can see it starts normal then the mouse clicks dont work, graphics get wierd and ubuntu shows up.

When it crashes I can bring up the windows security window to shutdown.

I deleted all the game files. I installed steam from the internet download. I used steam to install HL2. It worked fine for about 15min but crashed. when it crahsed the screen went black and the system did not respond to keyboad commands.

I installed a differenet video card and the game is running fine now.
