Have a read at http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htm and see if it relates to anything you have done or not done

Sounds like your hdd is fried. I helped someone else earlier this week with that problem. NTLDR is a boot file and is needed. He reformatted and it didnt do anything. Replaced it and it works good now. You could try this. There is a bootable utility on that site that might work.

Are you booting to the XP(i assume) install cd? You must go into the bios so that it looks for a bootable cd before it access the hard drive.

If the harddrive has never been formatted, which it doesn't sound like it has, the CD will automatically load provided it's in the drive and the boot order is set to CD first.

Honestly, this doesn't sound like an Asus problem, it sounds like you don't know what you're doing. Don't slam Asus yet, and don't rule them out until you have your own little duckies in a row.
