Default 2nd NIC card in windows 2003 server

Hi guys, I am sure someone has faced this before. Our client has a server that we plan to make it as exchage server. Therefore I will use both NIC cards, One for Internal IP, and other for external IP. One is GIg card, and other one is Mbps card. I have noticed that when using one connection, I can not use 2nd Nic card until I disable the first NIC, however firstone (Gig) works fine without the 2nd one being needed to disable. Any idea.
pls help
