Default (Another) RAM Problem

I have a 1 gig Corsair stick of ram in my laptop. I've had it a few years and everything has worked fine until recently, when I noticed things have been running a little slower than usual. My bios (which is the latest version from HP) recognizes the whole 1 gig, but through my computer/ properties, only 512 Mb is being recognized.

In another forum, someone suggested that the graphics adapter is using up half of the RAM, but I can't find a way to change how much the adapter uses. I also tried increasing the page file a little, with no result. Someone also suggested that the stick is bad, but wouldn't it just go all the way out if that was the case, instead of only half of it?

Anyone have any ideas?

A few more details:

HP Pavilion ZT1270
Windows XP SP 2
Pentium IV 1.6 GHz
ATI Radeon Mobility (M7) 7500 graphics adapter
