Default Ununtu question

Ok, the CPU fan on our Ubuntu comp is going crazy, full throttle, loud as a.. nut. Any linux geeks reading this know of a fan controller or something similar to cool&quiet (athlon xp 2800+ we be sportin) for ubuntu? It's getting on my damn nerves, this thing is hella loud..

Thank You!

Edit: I should have made the title more specific.... and spelled Ubuntu right. >_> :shrugs:

ACPI has a fan control setting IIRC. Do a synaptic search for it.

see if any processes are running crazy which would cause the fan to spin up.

In terminal type

Code:
top -s5 25
You may need to double check the syntax of that command since I can only verify that it works that way on Unix right now, and Linux and Unix have different syntax for a lot of the same commands.

I doubt so, if only because the moment I turn the thing on the fan acts up. Which now that I think of it may lead to the fan and not Ubuntu, d'oh. Half the noise is vibrations, yet it is mounted tight. After playing with it the vibrations are coming from this little fan.. Could be the sleeve bearing giving out.. The noise may be innate, as it's a vantec aerocool, and a google search tells me they can be loud. (just put the thing together from used parts, should've thought of this)

:sigh:

That's what I get.

take the can out and thoroughly clean it, or replace it, and see if it makes a difference.
