How do you mean? Do you want to back up a lot of info, or a normal amount?
Dual layer(make sure your DVD drive is dual layer with the DL designation) can store more info-costs more than a single layer, which, of course stores less. I find that Maxell CDs/DVDs the entire label/recording surface CRACKS AND PEELS right off the plastic disc counterpart if it is washed (yes, I wash CDs and DVDs )-so if you are obsessive compulsive with washing, avoid these.

look for made in japan.
my local walmart has maxel made in japan discs.

the general rule:
made in japan > made in singapore > made in taiwan (verbatim) > made in taiwan (HP)

it's deceptive. the gold will last for a hundred years but what about the dye? good dye degrades slowly over time. anybody who bought kodak gold crap.... i feel sorry for you. gold reflective layer but with cheapo dye.

That guide is golden to me ...
32 cents a disk should get you good, quality DVDs. Dual Layers are a bit more. I buy TY's only. I get a 100 spindle for under $40 shipped right to my door.

hippiegirl, that guide is outdated and hasn't been updated. it's only true for media 8x and slower. with the newest firmware you should burn too many coasters as noted on that site

for 16x go for verbatims. made in japan yuden's and maxel's quality dropped after 8x but is still above average. tdk has been known for degredation issues. same for ritek. sony media is just above average

for cheap ty's look for made in japan sony 8x + whenever there's a sale. do a price match at sears. they seem to have old stock
