Default The Royal Mint : new coins

So what does every one think of the new coins that will be starting to replace ?

the current designs from some time in the summer
Old Designs

the £2 coin wont be replaced (the big two tone circle coin) and that image of the pound is showing the wrong side

New Designs

"The new designs have been chosen via an open competition which was widely publicised in the national media in August 2005 and attracted 4,000 entries. The winning designer is 26-year-old Matthew Dent, originally from Bangor who now lives and works in London as a graphic designer.

After exploring a number of different options, Matthew Dent finally developed the heraldic theme, taking the greatest heraldic device ever used on coinage – the Royal Arms.

The New Coin Designs in FormationAs you can see in the image to the right, the Shield of the Royal Arms has been given a contemporary treatment and its whole has been cleverly split among all six denominations from the 1p to the 50p, with the £1 coin displaying the heraldic element in its entirety. This is the first time that a single design has been used across a range of United Kingdom coins.

The new designs will enter circulation gradually throughout the year. It is normal practice for banks to order coins from the Royal Mint to satisfy public demand, which fluctuates over the course of the year. The current coin designs will remain in circulation and as legal tender for the foreseeable future.

To mark this major numismatic milestone, the Royal Mint is offering a range of magnificent limited-edition collections produced to Proof quality. "

And if you have a spare £10k lying around then you could get the commemorative set of both sets of coins made from platinum

i think its quite clever and certainly brings a little intruige to the coins. Have to wonder if we still need a 1p and 2p coin anymore though, much like £5 notes they seem to be coming defunct.

The £5 note is an interesting one really ,anyone else noticed that they seem to be so scarce now, pay for something under a fiver with a tenner and its rare you will get a note back now, most places are out of them in no time

Yeah, i was on about that the other day Jimmy. It's really annoying when you pay for something that's like 50p with a £10 (because there's hardly any fivers) then you get loads of Pound Coins back that make a lead weight inside your pocket.

I really like £5 notes but banks don't give them out any more, you can't get them from an ATM. I don't even think there still making them.

Ah, Why are they changing!?

I occasionally get £5 notes... Actually, rather often... You don't tend to get 20's I find now...

Ahh, thats so cool!

We have custom state quarters which are kinda cool. I find it funny now, our 1cent penny now costs 2cents to make!

They look like special edition coins. Will be interesting to see them in the metal but I'm sure the novelty will wear off.
