Default cant install windows xp

hey first thanks for opening this,

iv been trying to download and instill windows xp onto my new motherboard but when i boot up it doesnt detect it at all.

the cd drive is workin fine under the bios and its booting as the main drive.

my new sata HDD is 2nd in booting.

at first i accidently burnt an iso file onto a cd-r without extracting, but then i ran out of cd-r's and extracted the files onto a dvd-r disk, and nothing booted.

i then went out and bought a CD/WR blank disk and burnt all the extracted files onto it and tried to load it onto my new mobo and it still doesnt detect anything. its just still on ms dos.

when theres no disk in any drives, ms dos boots and sais 'pleas insert correct bootable media device and re-boot, press any key to reboot'

i tried to install windows xp using the backup disks i got with this computer but it wouldnt boot up because it was designed only for emachines only. bill gates gotta make his money some way i guess.

i cant buy windows xp anywere and i dont trust ebay,

what can i do??

nick

We can't help you.
Go buy a real copy of XP. It's only $90.

But with your eMachines disk, as long as your eMachine doesn't have that copy of XP on it anymore, you COULD use the disk. You just need to set your CD/DVD drive to boot 1st.

Assuming that the installation key came with your PC, it's alright to download XP and install it since it's actually the key you pay for, not the heap of ones and zeros on the disc.

If you just extracted your files on a DVD-R, it's not gonna work, since it needs to be a bootable disc e.g. it has some kinda info at the start of the disc that tells the computer to load some stuff off the disc to get things running. But since, to me, it seems that you might be trying to illegally install XP without paying Uncle Gates, I can't tell you how to make the DVD bootable (i.e. how to copy the boot sector of the CD on to the DVD *wink wink*) or fix anything else that you may come across...discussions regarding illegal/cracked software in this forum are forbidden. Rules are rules, you know...sorry, mate.
