When you're burning a CD or DVD, it normally gives you the option to select the burn speed... Slower is a better quality, but obviously takes a longer.
If it's a new DVD/CD Drive, the read speed should be x52.

hey dan,
yeah i use Ashampoo burning studio 2008 but it didnt ask me what speed, well i didnt see any speed settings anyway. the drive isnt new,my cousin gave it me and its not bad its quite fast when burning audio tracks etc but when it comes to movies it takes quite some time ![]() i actualy think the burner in my old Hp is faster so thats why i wanted to compare speeds etc.

Any program should allow you to set what speed you burn at and won't allow you to set speeds any higher than the drive is capable of. I think IMGBurn shows you the current burn speed as it writes a disk. You could probably simulate a burn to do a benchmark without wasting disks. It's fairly uncommon to see burners working to their full potential.

Nero has a program built-in that determines the read/write speeds for various drives, you should check it out. You can download a trial from www.nero.com
