Default Concluded to be unfixable: X-fi Sound card

I am the unfortunate owner of a Creative x-fi xtreme music sound card. the sound was crisp and clean, and i really loved it. Now my sound is amazingly horrible at times.

when i say 'times' i mean when i open up an application. thats when it happens and also...for some odd reason, whenever i start up halo: combat evolved, the cracking, broken, distorted sound is their for the music that plays. but when i am at the menu, everything is all good. and whenever i get booted from a server, or i get the 'server is full' note from the game i notice that the sound gets distorted horribly, but once i trurn to main menu, the sound is once again perfect.

my speakers....are not the problem, they work fine with other computers. i also can plug them into my ipod....and the sound is pefect.

i personally feel that it has something to do with the 'resources' being used. cause whenever the sound distorts....my comp slows down a bit. like when opening an application...its takes longer than it used to when my sound was perfect. the sound also distorts when i boot up windows...and shut it off.

wierd. i tried all the usuall driver sheeznits so thats not a problem. i reseated my card, tried different ports and thats not a problem either.

i have a crap picture of the soundcard...i took it with my 1.3 mp phone so its really crap... but ive noticed that ontop of 3 of my 4 ports of the soundcard...it is slightly browned...like cooked...burned...spiked.... etc.

i will try the soundcard in a diff computer really quick and see if anything happens...wish me luck. ill post back results

After completing the past said events...well sort of...the sound card works PERFECTLY in my dads comp with:

Vista-Home premium
1 gb of stock ram
amd 4000+

I'm not going to lie here, but my comp kicks that little Compaq's booty. the sound card worked flawlessy there. Any suggestion? its 2:30 AM right now, so i am off to bed. I really don't know what is up!

Do you?

Vizy, does your Dad's PC have a VIA chipset? I've read that a lot of motherboards with VIA chipsets don't like Creative soundcards. My recently-retired FIC had a VIA chipset and any Creative card I tried in it did the exact same thing.

IDK if he has a VIA chipset. But the thing is that the Sound Card works FLAWLESSLY on his computer. no distortion or anything. And to add on what i mentioned earlier, the sound card used to work perfectly on my OWN build for about 3 months, then it went downward from there

That's sounds a bit extreme...but you could try playing some mp3's or something on a linux distro booted off a live cd, don't have to install anything.

I had to do that once with my old sound card. I seriously did everything i could and it still slows down when I'm doing CPU intensive tasks. A clean reformat solved the problem.
