Default What are the advantages of a good Soundcard?

Ive been getting more and more frustrated with games that need the EAX feature to enable high sound quality, but is it really worth splashing out on a decent soundcard for gaming?

Other then the EAX feature, I really dont see how its worth it. To me Its like the whole HD radio thing.

Well, it makes everything in games sound a lot better, including positioning and fidelity. Also it makes your music sound amazing, especially the X-fi series (excluding Xtreme Audio). I went from HD onboard to the Xtrememusic and was blown away (and no I don't have amazing speakers, just a $50 5.1 set).

i agree with DIDUKNOWTHAT because he makes sense. i went from onboard audio to my Xtreme Audio and it was great...especially with the x-fi crystalyzer. So get a X-fi card that is no the Xtreme Audio. this POS is going to make u go anal when it starts to eff up ur music on ur comp, but not on ur dads. POS

getting a sound card as opossed to using the integrated also lowers your cpu usage a bit.
integrated card use the cpu for the sound
pci soundcard usually have their own little cpu for that.

The X-fi Xtreme Audio will not allow you to turn on the "ultra high setting" in many games as it isn't a real x-fi. It's really just an Audigy SE card with a bunch of software emulations; thus it's only rated for the entertainment mode.
