Check your network connections, go to network settings make sure you have them enabled. Also go to device manager and make sure you have the NIC(network interface card) installed.

Thanks. I'm using an IBM T41. I rolled back the driver for the Intel Pro/1000 MT Mobile Network Connection. That did it. I now get the annoying cable unplugged from XP while wireless, but at least my ipconfig command works.

Driver that caused the ipconfig crash: 8.10.1.0 (11/7/2007)
Driver I rolled back to that makes ipconfig work: 6.4.16.36 (6/13/03)

I wonder if it has any other effect on my system. I also haven't been able to connect to a Mac with Tiger. Maybe now the shares will work.
