this thread would be crowded with replies in a few.
I'd say XP some would say Vista because of DirectX10 and future gaming, but thats just me.
I've seen some people getting errors on Vista regarding games and not being able to resolve it

what kind of downloading? Illegal? Cracked software? If it is the latter, then stick with XP, alot of cracked stuff is completely not workable in vista. oh and btw, we're not allowed to talk about that.

Well, maybe not. No, I'm not a big fan of Vista but really, it does look nice, which is a big +. Having used it for a while, it seems to have heaps of compatibility issues and whatnot but it's not that big pain after all.

That was true when it was released. It was filled with bugs, insects, flaws and so on but by now most of this crap has been fixed...I think. Most driver issues come along when you use pre-284 B.C. computers which have little if no support.

Feel free to hammer me for my posts.

I just wanted to add that IMO you should probably go with XP since you've already got it. I wouldn't waste my money on a new copy of Vista

My 2 cents. If you have the hardware go Vista. Most people who complain about Vista have rubbish hardware (usually budget laptops).

I run all games on Vista (COD4, Crysis, CoH, Assassins Creed, COD2 and so on) with NO PROBLEMS. If you have the hardware go for Vista. BTW, Vista's new graphics driver means that aero etc has NO IMPACT on 3D gaming performance. SP1 has made my games much more responsive, and Direct X 10 is the future. You can always dual boot too.

However, it is true to say, at the moment, if you look solely at FPS, XP is faster for gaming. I do think though, that you would be hard pushed to actually notice, although you will be able to notice Direct X 10 soon enough.

Also, don't forget that all of FutureMark's new/future products (e.g. 3DMarkVantage and PCMarkVantage) are/will be Vista only. You will see this trend more often in the future. Another thing, those old enough to remember, will remember that XP was also a pig when it was first released, Vista will mature too.

Just make sure you have adequete hardware.
