How many cores will winows 7 support?

That's an impossible question to answer since the current quad core models are already supported by XP and Vista while boards may need a bios update if capable there. As far as Windows 7 and new 6 core/8 core cpus?

That will be a mystery until the next version finally reaches the beta testing stages. That may be seen in late 2009 while the Release Canidates would tend to be 6 months later. Only MS knows for sure there!

Simple answer. Its more of a limit on AMD or Intel of how many cores they can put on a processor and if your motherboards chipset will support it. As far as the OS the number of cores it can support, even Windows 2000 can support a Quad core. From Windows 2000 and up theres not really a limit on core support for each processor. More than likely Windows 2000-XP-Vista and the next OS can already support 6 to 8 core single CPU.

The problem first addressed was with dual cpu server boards seeing a loss of performance being applied to 2000/XP when the dual core models were first coming out. MS provided a registry edit for server OSs that could be applied to XP there. Since then both Intel and AMD have released patches usually seen as part of the MS updates.
