Not sure if this is the right section, so feel free to move if it isn't.

I'm wondering if there is anyway to set up an automatic logoff on windows xp, if the pc has been inactive for a certain period of time. Any ideas if there is an option for this, or do I need a program to do this.

I think there's a command you just type in the command prompt to logoff...if there is one, I dunno what it is, but I'm sure that there's a way to do it form the commanline... anyways, I'd just create a batch file with this mysterious command "XY alpha" that logs you off, and schedule it to run after a certain period of inactivity.

Did some research. the command is "LOGOFF". So you just go to notepad, type in LOGOFF and save the file with .bat extension. That little program will log you off.

HI,
I never actually turn my computer off unless I'm going out of town for a while. Instead, I use the Sleep mode which automatically logs off and puts the computer in a low power standby condition. When I want to resume computing, a simple move of the mouse or hitting any key instantly bring up the log on window. Sure does save a lot of boot time and wear and tear on the drives. And it's fast and secure.

BTW, I'm using Vista but Sleep is available on XP. It can also be set up to operate on a timed basis. Another advantage of the sleep mode is Windows Update can wake the computer to download and install new software. I use the default update time of 3:00 AM daily.
