Default Cannot Access External HDD's?

I got four external HDD's that connect via USB. The laptop screen was broken, so its recently been in for repair, and was factory formatted. Now, for some reason, I can only get the laptop to read my 40/60/80gb externals. When I plug in the 500gb, it starts copying, then says Delayed Write Fail, and the HDD goes into standby (on, but not spinning - cool feature!). The HDD is still fine because works on other laptop and two desktops. Wondering if anyone had had this problem before or knew how to fix it. The laptop is an Acer TravelMate 2492Wlmi, but with 120gb HDD and 2GB RAM. Thanks.

Has it ever recognized the large disk? If so, did anything happen in between it working and not working?

Yes, before its excursion to the repair centre, I connected it to the laptop many times and copied several hundred gigabytes with no problems. No I have recieved it back from its "repair" it does not work with the disk. I know its not an HDD problem, because it works with my other equipment. I have updated all my drivers, but this makes no difference. Nothing new apart from new screen cable, new HDD, new RAM and new restore. All of these components are in correct working order, and I have tried two diff HDD's/RAM sets, and restored again, but the problem still prevails.
