Don't even bother brining this old and tired subject up on these forums. You will only be barraged with tons of wrong information. I suggest you go read some mac-centric blogs and forums and then go to some windows ones and compare and contrast yourself.
Otherwise, you will just be led in the wrong direction, this thread is already not giving proper information out. |

Because if someone actually takes the step of releasing widespread virus for mac's, you're screwed until developers find a way to stop them.

People will prefer whatever operating system they know and have software for.
Windows XP is very very stable these days. I haven't had a crash in over 2 years, although I've had my share of viruses which have added some annoyance. My family recently switched over to an imac - whenever they're up at my flat and use the computer they comment how quick and honest xp is compared to osx, I'm inclined to agree. It used to be that OSX was a no nonsense, stable and stripped back o/s. The last 4 years it's become cluttered and slow. Programs quit for no reason, opening software can take an age... Strangely any mac I've used that hasn't been subjected to an internet connection has been lightening quick (as are windows pc's in that situation), but it seems that it's windows that holds up better to the web... This is just an opinion, but it's based on ownership and usage of 5 macs (pro, 2ximac, g4 and ibook) and several pc's. I own a mac - I think they build beautiful machines, but I'm not impressed with the o/s

Even then, it is near impossible for it to self propagate. While it isn't impossible, if there actually were viruses floating around in the wild for Unix/Linux OSes, it would be very hard for it to do what it does to windows. |

True. I have moved to the UNIX/Linux world in 2003 and will never come back to the Windows world, although I do arrive at the Windows world temporarily (using school PCs, assisting other people with their Windows problems, etc.)
As far as I am concerned, I removed Windows from a brand-new computer and I didn't even give Windows a chance to live just five minutes on my machine -Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and Fedora Core 8 took over.I'm buying a laptop soon after I get rid of all of my old PCs (I have 8 of them) so I have just one desktop and just one laptop. Solaris 10 will evict Windows Vista off the hard drive. ![]() |

I have had only probably five crashes all in all throughout my six +/- years using Linux, and it was just those unstable program crashes that were an easy fix when updates became available. Viruses? Not even really a word in Unix/Linux vocabulary, although it is possible, but (I forgot his or her name) mentioned that it would not do what it does to Windows, if anything.
Use Linux! I have probably told about several thousand people this now! I think I will go to Costco and buy cheap DVD-Rs and burn copies of Linux that people can use and pass them out while I am at a restaurant, in the store, or walking around at school. It's a good deed to do. I've given a copy already to one of my students a couple months ago. She likes it. Last edited by concorde; 04-13-2008 at 03:25 AM. |

I don't think we should oppose Windows XP vs. OSX or Mac vs. PC to each other..
My way is to make them friends thru Virtualization Machine, particularly thru Parallels Desktop and BootCamp. With this apps I can get advantages from both habitual Windows and smart OSX. ![]() |
