Default HP laptop, Vista and recovery

Hello everyone,

I have an HP laptop with windows XP pro on it, and i would like to istall the windows Vista system on it. But i have a question with the installation: On my laptop are two drives: C and D drive. On C i have all my file...ecc. but on the drive D i have the HP recovery system. Now, if i would like to install the Vista system, must i only erase the C partition or both? I don't even know where to find the HP recovery install file. Thank you for your help.

Best regards.

P.S.: The XP pro system was alredy installed on the computer.
