Default System transfer

I'm looking at building my own system(have HP Pavillion now) Can I transfer all programs including windows xp to my new system or do I have to purchase xp. If I do have to purchase then what on my system can I transfer.

Thanks for any help

P.S. is this thread in the right place?

You have to reinstall everything on your new system. And if you have your XP disc then you can use the same serial to install on the new system.

And yes it is in the correct place.
