You can use VirtualDUB to take out a piece of the video and save that segment.

Run the program and use 'Home' and 'End' keys to select a segment of the clip and file>save segmented avi. [Under Audio and Video leave both to 'direct stream copy']

[VirtualDUB only outputs to avi]
